2021 Firm Risk Management Spring Co-Op Program (Baltimore)
Morgan Stanley’s Operational Risk Department (ORD) offers a unique opportunity to work in an area of the Firm with broad exposure to the business and technology operations. Cooperative Education (Co-Op) Programs in Operational Risk gain substantial hands-on experience across multiple areas of the Firm. Operational Risk is the risk of financial loss or other potential damages to the Firm's reputation due to inadequate or failed internal processes, people or systems, or from external events. Operational Risk Co-Op positions comprise of a variety of functional areas, to include strategic business analysis, cybersecurity, fraud, third-party, and technology risk. Operational Risk works with the business units and control groups to help ensure Morgan Stanley has a transparent, consistent and comprehensive program for managing operational risk, both within each area and across the Firm globally.
Placement and Duration:
The ORD Co-Op Program is a paid opportunity for participants to both learn about the Financial Services Industry, as well as further develop the necessary professional competencies to be successful within Operational Risk. Co-Op participants are part of a 6-month program that runs every year from January to June and July to December. Placement varies in accordance with business needs, and is aligned to the skills and interests of the participant, as well as captured feedback throughout the interview process. Co-Ops are integrated into Operational Risk and are expected to take on responsibilities of fulltime analysts.
Responsibilities:
Work collaboratively on high performing teams responsible for protecting the Firm's franchise, reputation and financial standing, the interests of the Firm's employees, clients, shareholders and the market at large, partnering with the business units and control groups to maintain a consistent firm-wide perspective on Operational Risk; and finally, effectively identify and mitigate Operational Risk while ensuring continued compliance with global regulatory requirements.
In ORD Baltimore, participants may have exposure to the following functional areas detailed below:
Strategic Business Analytics
- Provide analytic support for operational risk evaluations
- Monitor data used to identify and evaluate risks and develop risk remediation recommendations
- Contribute to presentation development for senior management and senior risk managers
- Review and execution of relevant procedures and assess assurance mechanisms for how effectively they identify weaknesses or failures of key controls
- Support execution of governance, risk assessment, process review and validation, monitoring, reporting and technology strategy;
Strategic Product Management
- Contribute to the development of business requirements for operational risk technology platforms
- Provide business administration and support, including management and investigation of user issues, troubleshooting of user/business requests, and maintenance of reference data
- Gather business requirements, functional specifications, create test plans, and co-ordinate testing and signoffs
- Contribute towards the development and maintenance of the strategic program roadmap, project plans and milestones
- Participate in project working groups, requirement workshops and meetings
Cybersecurity, Technology & Information Security
- Participate in efforts towards assessing risks of those types inherent in the Firm’s activities, as well as ways to manage that risk
- Conduct research into Firm systems or real-world Cyber and Information Security concepts, and apply what you learn to assessments or projects underway on the team
- Analyze and parse data taken from the Firm’s systems and networks in order to identify potential problems
- Prepare or structure data sets in support of efforts to develop better, more automated ways to understand risk
- Articulates technical understanding of vulnerabilities or methods for Cyber-attacks into potential impacts on a financial services firm
- Conduct analysis and assess the implications of technical decisions or a particular business process flow in a financial context
