2020 Firm Strategy & Execution Summer Analyst Program (New York)
Firm Strategy and Execution (FSE) advises Morgan Stanley's senior leadership on the Firm's strategic priorities and manages Corporate Development initiatives across all divisions, including Institutional Securities, Wealth Management and Investment Management. FSE reports to the Firm's Chief Financial Officer.
FSE has played a significant role in many of the strategic actions undertaken by Morgan Stanley, including the Smith Barney acquisition, the MUFG investment and strategic alliance, the sale of the Global Oil Merchanting unit, and the acquisition of Mesa West Capital. In addition, FSE supports senior management on a number of strategic initiatives to improve and streamline the Firms businesses.
FSE offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the Firm's senior management, including Morgan Stanley's CFO and Business Unit leaders. As a member of FSE, this individual will participate in the development and execution of critical business decisions that drive Morgan Stanley's strategic direction and profitability. This individual will work primarily in small teams and be encouraged to take ownership of his/her projects.
Placement and Duration:
The 10-week FSE Summer Analyst program takes place at Morgan Stanley’s headquarters in New York. Summer Analysts will have the opportunity to work on both strategy projects and principal M&A transactions, while gaining direct exposure to senior management. On strategic consulting projects, Summer Analysts can expect to develop advanced problem-solving skills, strategic thinking frameworks, and a much deeper understanding of the global financial services industry. Through analysis and execution of principal M&A projects, Summer Analysts will learn the fundamentals of company valuation, deal sourcing, structuring and execution, due diligence, negotiations and business integration.
Training Program:
Alongside other peers, FSE Summer Analysts will attend the five-day Investment Banking Division (IBD) training program, which includes both academic and practical sessions focusing on financial accounting and modeling training from accomplished instructors, bankers and university professors. Following this, FSE Summer Analysts may also participate in additional training focused specifically on the financial services sector and industry-specific valuation and accounting methodology.
Responsibilities:
FSE projects are aligned with Morgan Stanley’s three main business units: Institutional Securities, Investment Management and Wealth Management. Projects are categorized as either:
- Strategic Consulting Projects: Evaluating market trends, competitive forces and internal competencies to identify emerging and new opportunities for the Firm; providing leadership and support for the strategic development and capital planning process.
- M&A Execution Projects: Providing valuation analysis and execution expertise for potential mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and minority investments for Morgan Stanley.
Qualifications/Skills/Requirements:
- You are a current junior undergraduate student with superior academic achievement and a strong interest in financial services.
- You are analytical and quantitative, a quick learner, both a leader and team player.
- You are a great multi-tasker, possess a strong work ethic, have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a positive attitude.
